“On the many postwar photobooks on European cities, this is one of the best, and its neglect at the time it was published is regrettable” (Gerry BADGER). Victor PALLA and Costa MARTINS, both architects, made about 6000 photos during three years for this project. The texts are spread throughout the book, with poems by Eugénio de Andrade, Fernando Pessoa, Gil Vicente and some others. Because this book was initially issued in seven fascicles, and only later the “unsold” fascicules were bound together, and in doing so a a few pages are swapped in this copy, so the order of a few photos is different – from that indicated in the “index” but the book is complete.
