This account of Oskar’s astonishing history is based in the first place on interviews with fifty Schindler survivors from seven nations – Australia, Israel, West Germany, Austria, The United States, Argentina and Brazil. To use the texture and devices of a novel to tell a story is a course which has frequently been followed in modern writing. It is the one chosen to follow here. It has been attempted to avoid all fiction. Most exchanges and conversations, and all events, are based on the most detailed recollections of the Schindlerjuden, of Schinderler himself, and of other witnesses to Oskar’s acts of outrageous rescue.
